World Osteoporosis Day

October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day. Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by weakened bones that are more prone to fractures. Information and treatment for osteoporosis is severely lacking, especially in Central Illinois. The key to treating osteoporosis is prevention, which begins with screening.

Women are particularly at risk for osteoporosis, as the transition through menopause reduces bone-healthy female hormone levels. Osteoporosis is more common in women than in men. About one in two women over the age of 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Other risk factors for impaired bone health include smoking, using certain medications, being Caucasian, thin frame, and having a family history of broken bones. A DEXA scan can help women to know if their bones are less dense than normal, which can suggest an increased risk for fractures in the future.

Reducing the risk of bone fracture is essential to living a long, quality, active life. Hip fractures are particularly common among older adults, especially women, due to osteoporosis. Each year, hundreds of thousands of hip fractures occur worldwide. After a hip fracture occurs, many women experience reduced mobility, independence, and increased risk of further health issues. Some people may face long-term difficulties with walking and daily activities.

Medications can be extremely helpful in reducing the risk for fracturing a bone. However, many health care professionals do not know much about the medications to treat osteoporosis. Sarah and Kelly have received specialized training to be able to treat osteoporosis, and we also have experience in working with insurance companies to arrange coverage for them. We can help guide you through treatment options to make a choice that you feel good about. Please call and schedule a consultation if you have questions regarding your bone health!
